Free ‘Lesestart’ Book Sets Spark Early Literacy for 100 Toddlers in Schiefbahn
The Bibliothek im Brauhaus (BiB) in Schiefbahn is set to distribute 100 'Lesestart' sets for three-year-olds starting Tuesday, November 18. This initiative is part of the 'Lesestart 1-2-3' program, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and implemented by 'Stiftung Lesen'.
The 'Lesestart 1-2-3' program aims to foster language and reading skills from infancy. Over three consecutive years, parents receive these sets for their children at ages one, two, and three. Each set includes an age-appropriate picture book, multilingual parenting guides, and a small fabric tote bag. The BiB, which offers free library membership, ensures every Willich family can explore the world of books without financial barriers. The library includes a registration form in each 'Lesestart' set, inviting families to sign up for a free library card. This partnership between the 'Lesestart 1-2-3' program and the BiB supports local reading promotion efforts, fostering early and accessible literacy opportunities in the community. Poor reading skills can limit access to knowledge, reduce personal autonomy, and create barriers in everyday life. One in four children in Germany struggles to read by the end of primary school, making initiatives like 'Lesestart 1-2-3' crucial.
The BiB's distribution of 100 'Lesestart' sets for three-year-olds is a significant step in promoting early literacy in the community. By providing these resources and encouraging library membership, the BiB and the 'Lesestart 1-2-3' program aim to improve reading skills and foster a love for books among young children.
