Frankfurt's historic buildings reborn as a cutting-edge school for 1,500 students
Two old administrative buildings in Frankfurt's Sachsenhausen district are being transformed into a modern school campus. The site will house Gymnasium Süd, with capacity for around 1,500 students. Work has already begun, with heavy machinery removing parts of the old structures to make way for the new facilities.
The renovation involves gutting the existing buildings and replacing outdated technical systems. Cranes are now lifting away façade sections, some weighing up to four tons. Once demolition is complete, crews will waterproof the basements and apply new exterior designs.
The finished campus will include approximately 50 classrooms and various specialist teaching rooms. A full-service cafeteria, a divisible sports hall with four courts, and outdoor facilities will also be added. Outside, the schoolyard will feature green roofs, shaded seating, and an open-air 'green classroom'.
Construction will proceed in stages, with interior work scheduled to start in autumn 2026. The sports hall is expected to be completed by spring 2028. By the 2027/2028 academic year, the entire campus should be ready for students, offering energy-efficient infrastructure alongside its teaching and recreational spaces.
The project will expand Frankfurt's supply of modern school buildings, providing updated educational facilities for the city. When finished, the campus will combine classrooms, sports areas, and outdoor learning spaces in a single location. Official updates on progress can be found through the city's education authority and local planning records.
