Frankfurt transforms old offices into a cutting-edge school for 1,500 students

Two old administrative buildings in Frankfurt's Sachsenhausen district are being turned into a modern school campus. The project will create space for around 1,500 students at Gymnasium Süd. Work is already underway, with the new site set to open for the 2027/2028 academic year.

Preparations have finished, including the removal of old technical systems and the gutting of the buildings. ABG FRANKFURT HOLDING is overseeing the extensive renovation of the two existing structures.

Construction will move in stages, starting with the exterior. The design will include wide window bands and coloured fibre-concrete panels. Interior work is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026.

Inside, the campus will house roughly 50 classrooms and a range of specialist teaching rooms. A full-service cafeteria and a divisible sports hall with four courts will also be built. The site will feature energy-efficient systems to reduce environmental impact.

Outside, the schoolyard will be redesigned with green roofs and shaded seating. Plans include an outdoor 'green classroom', sports zones, a long-jump pit, and playground equipment. Additional features will be calisthenics areas, tiered seating, and a school garden with trees and planting beds.

This project adds to Frankfurt's expanding collection of modern school buildings. It aims to provide high-quality educational spaces for students in the coming years.

The new campus will offer classrooms, sports facilities, and outdoor learning areas. It is part of Frankfurt's push to upgrade school infrastructure across the city. Students at Gymnasium Süd are expected to begin using the site in 2027.
