Fort Collins Human Library 2026 Explores Identity Through Personal Stories
The Fort Collins Human Library returns in 2026 with a focus on identity and belonging. The free event invites participants to engage in one-on-one conversations with volunteers who share their personal stories. Organisers aim to foster understanding and challenge prejudice in a safe, open environment.
The event will take place on Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery. Each attendee, called a Reader, can check out up to four Human Books—volunteers who discuss their lived experiences. This year’s theme, Being Me in Fort Collins, explores identity, belonging, and life in Northern Colorado.
The Human Library concept began in Copenhagen in 2000, created by Ronni Abergel. Since then, it has grown into a global movement, operating in over 80 countries across six continents. Locally, the Fort Collins edition is organised by the museum in partnership with the City of Fort Collins, Poudre Libraries, and the Yarrow Collective. Additional support comes from the Fort Collins Area Interfaith Council and the international Human Library Organisation. The event is open to adults, while children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Attendance is free, but preregistration is required. Organisers emphasise creating a non-judgmental space where difficult topics can be discussed openly.
The 2026 Human Library offers a chance for meaningful conversations in Fort Collins. Participants will hear diverse perspectives and reflect on themes of identity and community. The event continues a global tradition of breaking down barriers through personal storytelling.
