Harvard University Loses Certification to Host International Students
Minister Dorothee Bär expressed concern and disapproval over the U.S. government's decision to revoke Harvard University's certification to host international students.
In an interview on Bayern 2, Bär stated that she found the situation at Harvard "highly dramatic" and considered it a responsibility for Germany and the European Union to protect academic freedom. She plans to discuss this matter with her EU colleagues in Brussels on Friday.
Bär referred to the U.S. government's decision as a "very bad decision" and a "not positive signal" for the future of education. According to her, the decision is not favorable for the younger generation or the free world.
The U.S. government, under the leadership of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, has taken away Harvard University's ability to enroll new international students under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Existing international students at the university must either transfer to another U.S. institution or leave the country.
However, a federal judge in Boston has issued a temporary restraining order, allowing international students to continue their studies for the time being. A hearing is scheduled for the following week.
As a result, Bär noted that German universities have received an increase in inquiries from foreign academic staff and students. "We can already see that we are not only receiving support from the USA, but also from countries like China and India, which would normally have gone there," Bär explained.
Harvard views the government's action as "unlawful" and considers it a "retaliatory action." The university argues that they should continue having the opportunity to accept international students and scientists, as they contribute significantly to the university and the country.
