Florida Woman Sentenced to 25 Years for Fatal Neighbor Dispute

A Florida woman, Susan Lorincz, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 2023 manslaughter of her neighbor, Candace Owens, a Black mother of four. The case, explored in Netflix's 'The Perfect Neighbor', saw Lorincz kill Owens in front of her ten-year-old son during a dispute over the children playing in a field.

The tragic incident occurred on June 2, 2023, when Owens's son asked Lorincz to return an iPad. An argument ensued, culminating in Lorincz shooting Owens through her front door. Lorincz, who is White, had previously called the police multiple times about Owens's children playing in the field, claiming they were 'trespassing', despite the field's owner having no issue. Owens, a devoted mother, was known for her involvement in her children's lives, attending their sports practices and volunteering in their classrooms.

Lorincz was arrested four days after the shooting and charged with manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault. In August 2024, a jury found her guilty of manslaughter, and she was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Lorincz is currently serving her sentence at Homestead Correctional Institution in South Florida, with a release date of April 8, 2048. Florida's 'Stand Your Ground' law was not deemed applicable in this case, as police determined Lorincz's actions were not justifiable self-defense.

The murder of Candace Owens by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, has left a lasting impact on the community and her family. The case, now the subject of a Netflix documentary, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of escalating petty disputes. Lorincz's 25-year sentence reflects the severity of her actions and the value placed on human life in society.
