FDP Rhineland-Palatinate to create "Vocational Gymnasium" - FDP’s Daniela Schmitt pushes bold education reform ahead of critical state election

Daniela Schmitt, the FDP’s lead candidate in Rhineland-Palatinate, has called for a major overhaul of education policy at the state party conference in Frankenthal. Her proposals, including a new 'vocational grammar school' (Handwerksgymnasium), were met with strong approval from delegates. The party now faces a tough challenge in the upcoming March 22 state election, with recent polls showing support below the five-percent threshold needed to retain seats.

Schmitt’s speech outlined a vision for schools to better prepare students for both vocational training and university. She argued that the current system fails to provide enough practical skills, leaving many young people ill-equipped for the job market. The proposal for a Handwerksgymnasium would integrate hands-on expertise into the curriculum, blending academic learning with trade-specific training.

The conference ended with prolonged applause for Schmitt’s proposals, signalling strong internal support for her education reforms. Whether this momentum will translate into votes remains uncertain. The March 22 election will determine if the FDP can maintain its parliamentary presence and push its agenda forward.
