Families defy freezing winds to keep Christmas Eve tradition alive

Families braved the cold on Christmas Eve to gather at St. Cosmas Church for a beloved annual tradition. At 4 p.m., the community came together to celebrate Christmas with music, prayers, and a Nativity performance by local children.

The service began with the Harmonie Oberbeuren brass band playing festive hymns. Despite the icy wind, the musicians carried on as gusts blew away sheet music and extinguished lanterns.

Children from St. Cosmas Kindergarten then took the stage, acting out the Nativity story as told in Luke’s Gospel. Schoolchildren dressed as shepherds led the congregation in prayers, thanks, and blessings. To mark the occasion, every child received a small bell to ring out the joyful message of the Holy Night. The event has been held every year, no matter the weather. Families bundle up and return to the church to share in the celebration, keeping the tradition alive for another Christmas.

The service ended with the ringing of bells and the sound of carols filling the chilly air. Despite the winter conditions, the community left with the warmth of shared faith and festive cheer. The tradition will continue next year, as it has for generations.
