Exploration of Grassroots Innovation and Indigenous Science: A Gathering of Experts from 11 States at Maa Danteshwari Herbal Farm in Bastar, Bharat Nirman Yatra

The Natural Greenhouse Model at Maa Danteshwari Herbal Farms and Research Center in Bastar, India, is making waves as an indigenous, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative to conventional polyhouses. This innovative approach, built at approximately Rs 2 lakh per acre, is significantly cheaper than commercial polyhouses that cost around Rs 40 lakh per acre.

This model, which promotes ecological balance, minimal water usage, and long-term soil sustainability, is well-suited for sustainable rural development in Bastar. The Natural Greenhouse incorporates an innovative agroforestry and intercropping system, including black pepper cultivated on Australian teak (MDAT-16 variety), turmeric, insulin plants, and natural nitrogen fixation techniques.

One acre of the Natural Greenhouse can produce timber worth around Rs 2.5 crore over 8-10 years, far surpassing the economic return potential of conventional polyhouses. This integrative approach supports farmers' livelihoods and enhances the ecological health of the region.

The visit to Maa Danteshwari Herbal Farms was part of a unique national learning expedition called Bharat Nirman Yatra, aimed at India's sustainable transformation. The group, consisting of 25 highly educated young professionals from 11 states, was guided by Anurag Tripathi and Apoorva Tripathi through the farm's Ethno-Medico Forest, an in-situ conservation initiative preserving 22 rare and endangered medicinal plant species in their natural habitat.

Jasmati Netam, a tribal woman leader, offered insights on the evolving role of tribal women in herbal-based rural economies and their leadership in eco-farming. The delegates also had the opportunity to learn about the farm's intercropping model of black pepper with Australian teak (MDAT-16), along with the cultivation of turmeric, insulin plants, and natural nitrogen fixation through agroforestry practices.

The farm, a unique convergence of traditional knowledge, organic farming, ecological innovation, and social responsibility, is considered a game changer in rural Bastar agriculture. It empowers local communities with eco-friendly, sustainable, and economically rewarding farming techniques under the banner of Maa Danteshwari Herbal Farms and Research Center.

The Natural Greenhouse Model, previously highlighted at Maa Danteshwari Herbal Farms, cultivates over 340 varieties of medicinal and aromatic plants. Hundreds of tribal families across Bastar have sustainable livelihoods due to the large-scale cultivation at the farm.

The event was made seamless and impactful by the organizing team, including Mrs. Shipra Tripathi, Mr. Kevin, Rishiraj, Balai Chakrawarti, and Madhuri Devangan. A global advocate for organic and indigenous agriculture, Dr. Rajaram Tripathi, joined the gathering virtually from Russia, representing India at an international agricultural summit.

The delegates enjoyed a traditional Bastar lunch served under the open sky, surrounded by the serene fields, as part of their immersive learning experience. The Natural Greenhouse Model is a testament to the power of grassroots innovation in driving sustainable rural development.
