Commission recommends more cooperation in science - Expert Panel Calls for Bold Reforms in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Research Sector

A panel of experts has examined the academic and research sector in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (MV). Their report highlights both strengths and areas needing improvement. Key recommendations include better coordination, clearer research priorities, and stronger ties with international partners.

The commission found that MV’s two university medical faculties lead to high per-student spending—€11,100—and a concentration of 12% of students in medicine. However, they also identified unnecessary duplication in degree programmes across the region. A full review of academic offerings was advised to streamline resources and avoid overlap.

One of the report’s central proposals is an integrated science system, a first for German science policy. This would bring together universities, research institutes, and industry to improve collaboration. The commission also called for a Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Graduate Academy to support postgraduate research and training. Stronger international links were another priority, with a focus on the Baltic Sea region and neighbouring countries. While no specific foreign institutions were named, the University of Greifswald plans to expand its Baltic Sea research. The report further stressed the need for academia to drive innovation, particularly for local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The recommendations aim to make MV’s academic sector more efficient and globally connected. A state-wide research strategy, better programme coordination, and closer industry ties could shape the region’s future. Implementation will now depend on policymakers and institutions working together.
