Excelling in Your Creative Endeavors
Student Oscar Merritt's Success Journey in Graphic Design
Oscar Merritt, a Graphic Design student, has found his current success largely due to Zoom meetings and instructors' feedback in his BFA programme. His journey began as an Undergraduate Certificate (UC) student before transferring to the BFA, where he discovered a more in-depth and focused learning experience.
Merritt's creative journey took an interesting turn when he found himself torn between two iconic American motorcycle manufacturers, Indian Motorcycle (IMC) and Harley Davidson (HD). This dilemma inspired a Special Topics II project in his BFA classes, where he explored the similarities and differences between the two brands. The purpose of the project was to promote the unique aspects of each brand to help those undecided about their purchase.
The museum-like event focused on American-made V-Twin motorcycles. Merritt's research led him to an intriguing discovery: IMC shared the same rich history and American pride as HD, but IMC products were more modern and stylish, and offered more as standard. This insight led Merritt to create a YouTube channel, Finesse The Challenger, which was successful and helpful to others, earning him a place in the Indian Motorcycle Ambassador Program.
Merritt's favourite project so far has been a narrated video project, despite initial concerns about his voice. He enjoys digital art and found the institution he is currently attending through their YouTube channel.
Drawing was a challenging course for Merritt due to the need to follow a structured approach. However, he found that the structured approach helped him with later assignments and explaining his creative process.
Every day is a lesson in creating for Merritt. He believes that lessons learned as a student should be a guide when creating, and understanding proven styles and philosophies will allow one to conform when needed and skirt those lines when necessary.
Merritt's creative goals after graduation include freelancing as a logo designer, landing major clients, and potentially teaching grade school art. There are no specific details about his post-graduation plans or creative goals available, as no relevant data was found in the search results.
Merritt's advice for someone considering a creative career is to be themselves and let their unique way of viewing or interpreting things shine through their art or designs. He served 20 years and 7 months in the Air Force, specifically in Logistics and Transportation, before embarking on his creative journey.
Oscar Merritt, now a successful graphic design student, discovered a passion for technology in his BFA program, creating a YouTube channel, Finesse The Challenger, to showcase his insights on American motorcycle brands. As he progresses in his education-and-self-development journey, he aspires to apply his skills in lifestyle fields, such as freelancing as a logo designer and potentially teaching grade school art.
