EU NEET Rates Vary Widely: Romania's 19.3% Challenges 2030 Goal
In 2023, the NEET (young adults not in employment, education, or training) rates across the EU varied significantly, ranging from a low of 4.8% in the Netherlands to a high of 19.3% in Romania. Estonia and Lithuania reported rates of 10.2% and 13.8% respectively. The European Commission, along with member states, is committed to reducing this rate to 9% by 2030, as outlined in the European Pillar of Social Rights.
Nine EU countries have already met or surpassed the 2030 target, demonstrating progress in the region. Latvia, for instance, saw a notable improvement, reducing its NEET rate from 16.6% in 2014 to 12% in 2023. However, significant challenges remain, with Romania's high rate of 19.3% indicating a need for targeted interventions. The responsibility for achieving this goal lies primarily with the governments of EU member states, supported by the European Commission's framework and initiatives.
As of 2023, the EU's NEET rate reduction goal for young adults remains a work in progress. While some countries have made significant strides, others still face substantial challenges. The European Commission and member states continue to work together to meet the 2030 target of 9%, aiming to ensure that all young people have access to employment, education, or training opportunities.
