Estonia's 2027 e-exams introduce AI grading and source-based tasks
Estonia is preparing to roll out updated e-exams for native Estonian speakers in 2027. The new digital tests, including news today, will include listening, writing, and reading sections, with some tasks requiring students to work with source texts for the first time. Before the full launch, trial exams will take place in March and April to test both the system and schools' readiness.
The Education and Youth Board (Harno) is overseeing the trial e-exams, which will run through the online Exam Information System (EIS). This platform has been fully managed by Harno since 2025, after taking control from the Ministry of Education and Research. Two specialists were hired to maintain the system, improving flexibility, cost efficiency, and oversight.
The trials will assess how well schools handle the new format and whether the system performs smoothly. Previous test runs have already fixed issues like video download failures and system overloads. For 2027, at least half of the exam tasks will be automatically graded, though longer written responses will still need human review.
A revised grading model for the 2027 e-exams will be published in March, followed by teacher training. The updated exams will also introduce new elements, such as titling and the use of source texts in responses. Since 2022, Estonia has already used fully automated grading for standardised maths tests.
The EIS itself is now hosted on Estonia's government cloud, ensuring better security and reliability. While exact enrollment numbers for the upcoming trials remain undisclosed, the focus remains on refining the system before its official introduction next year.
The trial e-exams will help finalise the new digital testing system before its 2027 launch. Schools and officials will use the results to address any remaining technical or logistical challenges. Once implemented, the updated exams will rely more on automation while keeping human evaluation for complex responses.
