The Online News Association (ONA), a group of journalists at the forefront of the digital media revolution, held its 15th annual convention last week in Los Angeles. The event was a hub for attendees to learn about new journalism tools and trends, network, and engage in thought-provoking discussions.

The convention featured a variety of panels and workshops. Notable keynotes included A Deep Dive into Google with Richard Gingras and Emily Bell, We Belong Here: Pushing Back Against Online Harassment, A Hollywood Spotlight on an Award-Winning Boston Globe, and Amy Webb's 10 Tech Trends. There were also Mobile Boot Camps on Using Periscope and Snapchat, Data for Dark Money in the 2016 Election, 50 Apps in 30 Minutes, Flying Into New Territory with Drone Journalism, and an unconference workshop topic pitch session on Saturday.

The ONA convention had programs supporting the next generation of journalists. The MJ Bear Fellows panel, the Student Newsroom, the HBCU Digital Media Fellowship, and the CNN Media Diversity Fellows were among these initiatives. Dori Maynard, a respected journalist and president of the Maynard Institute, was awarded ONA's highest honour, the 2015 Rich Jaroslovsky Founder Award, for her work in media diversity.

Attendees had the opportunity to participate in live talks, trainings, and demonstrations at The Midway, a space for attendees to play and learn about new journalism tools. Digital and traditional media companies and vendors were present in full force at the convention.

The convention schedule was full, but there were numerous opportunities for socialising. The hotel Starbucks line, the outdoor bar and pool, the lobby bar, the halls outside of workshops, the Karaoke party, and the famous late-night Pajama Jammie Jam were just a few of the places where attendees could unwind and connect.

Looking ahead, the 2016 ONA convention will be held in Denver from Sept. 15-17. With the ever-evolving landscape of digital journalism, it promises to be an exciting event for all those interested in the future of news.
