Enhanced school safety: City law enforcement strengthens supervision near educational institutions

In the first three weeks of the new school year, police officers have been present at various primary schools across the city. This intensified presence is part of a mission to increase the safety of children on their way to school.

The focus of these checks has been on traffic control, with the traffic department, in cooperation with the state police in the district of Mettmann, conducting targeted traffic controls around schools. Using mobile speed radars and laser measurement devices, they have identified 575 vehicles driving too fast out of a total of 16,437 measured vehicles, resulting in 319 speed violations. Additionally, 15 cases were discovered where children were not properly secured in vehicles, for which warnings and fines were issued.

Many parents like to drive their children right up to the school building, which often leads to confusing situations outside the schools. To address this, police officers have been engaging directly with parents during these checks, aiming to raise awareness and encourage small changes in behaviour. For instance, children getting out on the sidewalk side and parents respecting no-parking zones could significantly improve the situation.

The focus is particularly on so-called 'man city taxis.' Especially during the morning drop-off, the risk increases for everyone: turning maneuvers, heavy traffic, and haste mean a significant danger to the children. Peter Erkel, head of the city police department, emphasizes the importance of working together with parents, teachers, and children to ensure safe school routes.

These measures supplement the 'Safe to School' project, which has been running for years. Erkel emphasizes that all road users should show consideration for each other and avoid danger spots around schools. He explains, 'Especially during the morning drop-off, the risk increases for everyone: turning maneuvers, heavy traffic, and haste mean a significant danger to the children.'

The city police have intensified their focus on traffic situations around schools during the new school year, aiming to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for the city's children. Police officers have been observing the morning traffic situation at schools, issuing warnings where necessary during these checks. The goal is to create a culture of safety and responsibility among all road users, ensuring that every child can safely make their way to school.
