Emmen's Families Speak: Survey Shapes Future Childcare and Support

Emmen has gathered feedback from hundreds of families to shape future support for young children. A total of 494 households took part in an online survey, covering topics like childcare, neighbourhood life, and early support services. The municipality now aims to use this data to improve local offerings for families.

The survey reached families across every district in Emmen, ensuring a broad range of perspectives. Questions focused on daily challenges, access to childcare, and how existing services could be enhanced. Responses also highlighted the need for better-coordinated support in certain areas.

Currently, Emmen lacks a central family centre—a gap the municipality may address as part of its next steps. Similar models, like the family centre in Schaffhausen, have proven effective in streamlining early childhood services. Officials are now considering whether to introduce such hubs, potentially making Emmen a pioneer in the canton.

Other ideas under discussion include expanding preschool facilities, such as adding a new Spieltraum location in underserved neighbourhoods. Jürgen Feigel, head of the Social Services Department, thanked participants and partners for their involvement. He noted that the input would guide concrete measures in the coming months.

The municipality will finalise its analysis and present the findings to the municipal council. Further decisions on strategies and funding will follow that review.

The survey results will help Emmen tailor its early childhood services to local needs. If approved, new family centres and expanded preschool options could reshape how support is delivered. The next steps depend on the council's review and the allocation of resources.
