Emmen plans family centres to boost early support for parents and children
Emmen is exploring the creation of family centres to provide enhanced early support for parents and children. Currently, the municipality lacks central hubs for these services, though similar models have proven successful in other regions. A recent survey involving nearly 500 families has now offered key insights for the project.
The online survey gathered responses from 494 families across every district in Emmen. Participants shared their views on neighbourhood well-being, childcare needs, and the use of early support services. Jürgen Feigel, head of the Social Services Department, expressed gratitude to all families and partners for their involvement.
The municipality will now analyze the results in detail before presenting them to the municipal council. Based on the findings, potential measures—such as expanding services in specific areas—will be discussed. One proposal includes adding a new Spieltraum preschool location to better meet local demand.
Emmen's approach could set a precedent in the canton, as no family centres currently exist there. Officials have studied successful models, like the one in Schaffhausen, where a workshop in 2016 helped establish a similar facility.
The survey results will guide Emmen's next steps in improving early childhood support. If approved, family centres could become key hubs for accessing services more easily. The municipality aims to finalise its plans and present them to the council in the coming months.
