Electrical Experts Warn: No Extension Cords for High-Power Appliances

Electrical safety experts caution against utilizing extension cords and power strips for high-power appliances and electronics, including devices with heating elements or constant operation, as they can pose fire hazards and cause malfunctions.

Paul Martinez, owner of Electrified NYC, advises against using extension cords for appliances that run constantly or rely on a heating element, such as refrigerators, air fryers, microwaves, toasters, toaster ovens, and air conditioning units. These should always be connected directly to the wall outlet for safety.

Space heaters are a significant cause of fires, with an estimated 1,700 fires per year between 2017 and 2019. Extension cords and power strips should not be used with these appliances due to the high fire hazard risk. Additionally, daisy-chaining extension cords can lead to overheating and fire. Home extension cords should not be used for anything above 15 amps (1,800 watts).

To ensure electrical safety, always plug high-power appliances and electronics directly into the wall outlet. Avoid using extension cords and power strips for these devices, and never daisy-chain extension cords. If you need to use multiple devices, consider having additional outlets installed by a licensed electrician.
