Education landscape altered significantly as digital assistants like ChatGPT and others make their way into classroom settings.
In the picturesque town of Neftenbach ZH, high school teacher Michael Lutz is making waves by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into his teaching practice. Lutz, who teaches a mixed-age class of seventh to ninth graders, has been experimenting with AI to enhance the learning experience.
One of the tools Lutz has been using is Chat GPT, a popular AI model. According to Lutz, the use of AI in the classroom has led to some surprising outcomes. Students are exchanging ideas more freely, and these exchanges often result in unexpected insights.
The use of AI does not replace the critical thinking skills of the students, Lutz emphasises. Instead, it serves as a tool to support and enhance their thinking process. This is a sentiment shared by the other four teachers we interviewed, who remain unnamed in the available sources.
Interestingly, it seems that AI is not just limited to the classroom setting. Female students, in particular, are using AI to complete their homework. Remarkably, no one has noticed when students use AI for homework, suggesting that the integration of AI into educational routines is becoming increasingly seamless.
However, the use of AI by students raises concerns about their critical thinking skills. There is a fear that children might become less critical and trusting of information, potentially leading to an increased susceptibility to fake news.
Despite these concerns, Lutz reports that the use of AI has had a positive impact on his students' enthusiasm for writing and reading. The students, he says, are enjoying these activities more since the introduction of AI.
In addition, one of Lutz's students has even written a bachelor thesis on artificial intelligence, demonstrating the potential for AI to inspire and challenge students in their academic pursuits.
As the integration of AI in education continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how it shapes the learning experiences of future generations. For now, it seems that when used thoughtfully and responsibly, AI can be a valuable tool in the classroom.
