Dutch adults boost literacy and digital skills in 2024 education push
A new report has revealed how many adults in the Netherlands took part in basic skills courses during 2024. The study, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, tracks progress in improving literacy, numeracy and digital skills among people aged 16 and older.
The findings come from the National Overview of Adult Education 2024, published after a monitor survey carried out in 2025. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) conducted the research on behalf of the ministry, collecting data from all ten WEB-regions: Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Utrecht, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, Overijssel, Fryslân, Groningen, Drenthe and Limburg.
The results will help shape policies aimed at reducing low literacy in the Netherlands. By analysing participation rates, authorities can adjust programmes under the WEB framework. The ministry plans to use these findings to guide future funding and support for adult education.
