DUET holds seminar on prevention of sexual harassment, assault
An awareness seminar on preventing sexual harassment was held at Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) in Gazipur on Thursday. The event, titled 'Respectful Behaviour and Safe Environment: Awareness to Prevent Sexual Harassment and Assault', brought together experts, university leaders, and staff to discuss safety measures in higher education.
The seminar took place at DUET’s Shahid Shakil Parvez Auditorium, organised by the university’s Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee. DUET vice-chancellor Professor Mohammad Zoynal Abedin attended as chief guest, stressing the need for awareness, institutional action, and shared responsibility in tackling harassment.
Liuza-ul-Jannah reviewed existing policies, legal frameworks, and guidelines designed to prevent sexual harassment in universities. She outlined how these measures could be strengthened to protect students and staff. Takian Fakhrul, a guest speaker, focused on the role of institutional culture and behavioural changes in fostering safer environments. He argued that long-term prevention depends on shifting attitudes and reinforcing respectful conduct. DUET pro-vice-chancellor Professor Md Arefin Kowser highlighted the importance of enforcing policies effectively. He called for transparent complaint procedures, better support for victims, and a system where reports are handled without fear of reprisal. Professor Abedin closed by pledging to work towards a safer, more inclusive DUET. He committed to ensuring that victims can seek justice and that the university remains vigilant in upholding respectful behaviour.
The seminar aimed to strengthen DUET’s approach to preventing harassment and supporting victims. Discussions covered policy enforcement, cultural shifts, and the need for clear reporting channels. University leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a secure and respectful academic environment.
