Dr. Lisa Kimball Honored with First-Ever Amelia J. Dyer Award in Christian Formation
Dr. Lisa Kimball has received the 2026 Amelia J. Dyer Award in Lifelong Christian Formation. The honour recognises her decades of work in equipping and supporting faith leaders. The presentation took place at St. John's Cathedral in Denver during Forma's annual conference.
No previous record of this award exists, as no recipient had been documented before this announcement.
Dr. Kimball currently holds the James Maxwell Professor Chair of Lifelong Christian Formation at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS). There, she also serves as Vice President for Lifelong Learning, a role focused on fostering communities of faithful practice. Her leadership helped establish Forma's Certificate Program in Lifelong Christian Formation.
Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Work, Community, and Family Education from the University of Minnesota. She also earned a Master of Education in Youth Development Leadership from the same institution. Earlier, she completed an undergraduate degree in Human Biology at Stanford, specialising in Cross-Cultural Communications.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kimball has emphasised the role of laypeople in Christian formation. She advocates for the ministry of all baptised believers, particularly in lifelong learning and leadership. Forma, the organisation presenting the award, supports leaders across denominations in forming followers of Jesus.
The Amelia J. Dyer Award itself honours lifetime contributions to Christian formation within the Episcopal Church. Forma, a ministry of VTS Lifelong Learning, connects and equips leaders working globally in ecumenical settings.
The award was given at the 2026 Forma Annual Conference, marking the first time the honour has been publicly recorded. Dr. Kimball's work continues to shape Christian education through teaching, program development, and advocacy. Her efforts remain closely tied to VTS and Forma's mission of nurturing faith communities.
