Donovan Carrillo's Olympic Dream Is Changing Mexican Figure Skating Forever
Donovan Carrillo has reshaped Mexican figure skating by breaking barriers and setting new standards. His journey from training in a shopping mall to competing at the 2022 Olympics has inspired a generation. Now, he is working to ensure future skaters won't face the same challenges he did.
Carrillo made history as the first Mexican skater in 30 years to qualify for the Winter Olympics. He was also the only Mexican—and one of just three Latin Americans—to compete in Beijing in 2022. His success came after years of training in Mexico, where he often practiced in a shopping mall rink before moving to suburban Toronto in 2021.
The move to Canada was crucial for his development, though not without difficulties. Initially, he struggled to secure ice time and support in Toronto. Despite this, his partnership with coach Gregorio Nuñez became the most successful in Mexican skating history.
Carrillo's impact extends beyond his own achievements. At least two other Mexican skaters, including two-time national champion Andrea Montesinos and junior athlete Andrea Armento, followed him to Canada for training. His goal now is to build a high-level coaching team in Mexico so that talented skaters no longer need to leave the country for elite training.
His journey has already changed the sport in Mexico. Young athletes now see figure skating as a viable path, and Carrillo's efforts aim to remove the obstacles that once held them back.
Carrillo's career has opened doors for Mexican figure skaters, both through his Olympic success and his push for better training opportunities.
