DOE Unveils Discovery and Lux: Two Pioneering AI Supercomputers
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has revealed two pioneering AI supercomputers, Discovery and Lux, set to bolster America's leadership in AI and high-performance computing (HPC). The investments signal the nation's determination to stay ahead in the global AI race.
Discovery, slated for delivery in 2028, will be led by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and surpass ORNL's current flagship, Frontier, in all performance metrics. It will blend traditional supercomputing with advanced AI and quantum computing research, utilizing AMD's 'Venice' processors and Instinct MI430X GPUs. Meanwhile, Lux, led by AMD and integrated with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, is set to arrive in 2026, providing a near-term boost to AI capacity.
Both systems will transform scientific research, national security, and technological innovation. Discovery is expected to accelerate progress in nuclear energy, personalized medicine, and aerospace design, while Lux will focus on fusion energy, quantum materials, advanced manufacturing, and power grid resilience. The DOE's partner in this endeavor is Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), collaborating with HPE, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The DOE's unveiling of Discovery and Lux underscores America's commitment to leading the global AI supercomputing race. These systems, set to revolutionize scientific research and technological innovation, are expected to propel the U.S. to dominance in AI and HPC.
