District employees in Cobb County Schools terminated due to controversial online comments associated with Charlie Kirk

In a recent turn of events, the Cobb County School District has launched an investigation into several of its employees who are alleged to have made inappropriate comments about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The investigation was initiated following comments made by Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, who stated that the reason for the termination of employment of two individuals was due to their condoning or supporting of a school shooter. The exact number of employees involved is less than 15, according to Ragsdale.

The shooting occurred on a college campus, and the identity of the school shooter is Tyler Robinson. Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University.

The Cobb County School District's social media policy states that employees must use social media respectfully and ethically to avoid harming their own and colleagues' reputations, as well as the district's reputation. Ragsdale emphasized that the investigation is not about personal, political, or religious beliefs, but about how educators conduct themselves according to the district's policies.

One mother questioned how the social media posts of the employees could impact the classroom, while another expressed disbelief at the punishment of employees for expressing opinions on their own social media pages, not in a classroom or as a spokesperson for Cobb County Schools. Some parents disagreed with the investigation during the school board meeting, stating that it stifles free speech.

However, Ragsdale stated that any employee in education cannot be seen as condoning or supporting a school shooter. He clarified that the current investigation is not about the First Amendment, but about adhering to the school's social media policy.

Those employees are currently on leave while the district investigates potential violations of the school's social media policy. Previous coverage indicates that the Cobb County School District has disciplined teachers for celebrating Charlie Kirk's death. Multiple Cobb County School District employees are being disciplined for similar comments about Kirk's murder.

As the investigation continues, the district and the community await the results and any further actions that may be taken. The Cobb County School District has not released any publicly available information identifying specific employees currently under investigation for alleged social media comments about Charlie Kirk's death.
