Japanese Consul General's Community-Building Initiative Strengthens Ties in Los Angeles
In a bid to foster closer ties between Japan and Los Angeles, the Japanese Consul General has launched a community-building initiative in 2020. This project, aimed at the next generation, is expected to significantly impact the city's economic and social fabric.
At the helm of this initiative is Jonathan Karp, a seasoned journalist who began his career in Israel in 1986. Karp's journalism journey took him to various parts of the world, including stints as a foreign correspondent based in Hong Kong, New Delhi, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Before joining the Los Angeles Urban League, Karp served as the executive director of Asia Society Southern California from 2014 to mid-2019.
The initiative is a collaborative effort with local institutions such as the Los Angeles Urban League, and it enjoys the support of the Japanese business community. The project includes African-American delegations visiting Japan, internships and job opportunities at Japanese corporations, Japanese language programs, cultural exchange workshops, and events.
Michael Lawson, the President and CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League, is leading the charge. A graduate of Loyola Marymount University and Harvard Law School, Lawson brings a wealth of experience to the table. Prior to his role at the Urban League, Lawson served as a U.S. Ambassador in the Obama administration.
Debbie Adler, the first President and CEO of Global LA, is responsible for the leadership, strategy, membership, and delivery of the initiative. Adler previously worked for the British government as the North America Sector Director for the Creative, Media, and Sports Economy team with the UK's Department for International Trade (DIT).
Consul General Akira Muto, who has served as Consul General in Los Angeles since 2019, has over 25 years of experience in the Foreign Ministry of Japan. Muto's leadership in this initiative underscores Japan's commitment to strengthening its relationship with Los Angeles.
The success of this initiative in Los Angeles could pave the way for similar efforts in other cities. Programs organized by consulates or cultural bodies in Miami and other cities suggest that adapting community-building strategies based on local contexts is feasible and beneficial. The key to success lies in collaboration between diplomatic missions, cultural organizations, and local communities to tailor the initiatives according to specific regional needs and cultural compositions.
In the wake of this initiative, Karp has been consulting for various nonprofit organizations, continuing his work in fostering cross-cultural understanding and strengthening community ties. This project serves as a model for cultural diplomacy that can reinforce economic and social vitality locally and offers a replicable blueprint for other cities with Japanese consular presence or aspirations to deepen international community ties.
