Dhaka University’s first Pet Carnival champions animal welfare on campus

Dhaka University hosted its first-ever 'Pet Carnival' on Tuesday, organised by the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU). The event took place at the Teacher-Student Centre, starting at 3:00pm, with activities designed to promote animal welfare and compassion on campus.

The carnival was a joint effort between DUCSU, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, and Care DU. It included a Pet Ramp Walk, a 'dress as you like' segment for creative pet presentations, and cat competitions, such as an eating contest. Organisers aimed to raise awareness about street animals and encourage humane values among students.

As part of the initiative, the university’s 18 hall unions received animal food worth around Tk 2 lakh. They were also provided with shelter boxes and bird nests to support campus wildlife. DUCSU vice-president Shadik Kayem spoke at the event, stressing the need for compassion towards animals to protect biodiversity. Kayem described the carnival as an awareness campaign to institutionalise responsibility for animal welfare. The programme sought to foster a culture of care for both pets and stray animals within the university community.

The event brought together students, organisers, and animal welfare advocates for an afternoon of activities and education. By distributing supplies and hosting competitions, the carnival highlighted the importance of protecting and respecting animals on campus.
