DESY & UIUC Launch Deeptech Startup Hubs in Hamburg & Illinois

DESY and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have joined forces to create two innovation centers, 'Startup Labs Bahrenfeld' in Hamburg and another at the University of Illinois. These lighthouse projects aim to boost deeptech startups and strengthen the innovation ecosystems of both institutions.

DESY's 'Startup Labs Bahrenfeld' is already up and running, while the University of Illinois center is expected to open around the same time. These centers will benefit deeptech startups by providing a hub for collaboration and innovation.

The Hamburg Bahrenfeld area is already home to a thriving deep tech ecosystem, with DESY, European XFEL, and numerous startups and research institutions working together in photon science, particle physics, and biotech. DESY plans to further boost this ecosystem by establishing an 'Innovation Factory' by 2026.

The partnership between DESY and DPI (Digital Public Goods Alliance) seeks to promote knowledge and technology transfer and foster scientific spin-offs. Timothy L. Killeen, President of the University of Illinois system, aims to connect Illinois researchers to Germany's dynamic innovation system to accelerate ideas to market. Hamburg's Senator for Science, Katharina Fegebank, sees this cooperation as a way to expand international collaboration and strengthen Hamburg's innovation power.

The cooperation has already borne fruit, with 19 startups settled in the Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld's research campus, working in fields like photonics, sensor, pharma, and biotechnology.

The partnership between DESY and the University of Illinois is set to strengthen the deep tech ecosystems of both institutions. With the 'Startup Labs Bahrenfeld' already operational and an 'Innovation Factory' planned, Hamburg Bahrenfeld is poised to become a global hub for deep tech innovation. This cooperation is expected to support young companies and foster international collaboration, further boosting Hamburg's innovation power.
