DepEd Honors Unseen Heroes Shaping Philippine Education’s Future

The Department of Education (DepEd) celebrated outstanding educators and community partners at the DepEd Heroes Awards in Manila on Friday. The ceremony recognised seven teachers and several private stakeholders for their dedication to improving education across the Philippines.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara praised their efforts, noting how their work has strengthened schools and inspired communities nationwide.

Among the honoured teachers were Grace Bohol, Marivic Villacampa, Elmer Sugarol, Lorlita Lubao, Ma. Lourdes Rola, Mary Jane Reodica, and Erik Jims Bongon. Many of them faced extreme challenges, from natural disasters to remote conditions, to keep students learning safely. Some even led training programmes for Alternative Learning System (ALS) students, ensuring practical skills reached those outside traditional classrooms.

Others expanded Philippine education beyond borders, earning international recognition for their contributions. The awards also highlighted ‘young heroes’—students who risked their own safety to rescue classmates during emergencies. Private sector partners were equally acknowledged. Dea Solayao, lawyer Blake Feken, and Master Mariner Capt. Edcel Viraque received honours for their impactful support. Secretary Angara described their combined efforts as creating a ‘ripple effect’, lifting up not just individual schools but entire communities. The ceremony shone a light on those whose work often goes unnoticed. From rebuilding classrooms after typhoons to mentoring students in underserved areas, their commitment has helped secure better futures for thousands of learners.

The DepEd Heroes Awards put a spotlight on educators and partners who go above and beyond for Philippine education. Their recognised achievements—whether in disaster response, skills training, or international advocacy—reflect a shared mission to uplift learning opportunities. The agency’s tribute ensures their contributions will continue to inspire others in the sector.
