Delay in Implementing School Construction Ban in Bremen Until August 13th - Delay in Implementation of Mobile Phone Ban in Bremen Schools: Set for August 13 Enforcement

No longer coming next month, the controversial mobile phone ban in Bremen schools has been moved to the commencement of the new academic year on August 13. A rep from the education department confirmed the postponement to the German Press Agency after being asked. Previously, regional publication "buten un binnen" hinted at the delay.

Just two weeks ago, Education Senator Sascha Karolin Aulepp (SPD) announced an implementation date of June 1. But now, it looks like the delay is due to the hold-up on getting the personnel council's approval. As a result, the decree hasn't been published and isn't legally binding yet.

The schools have already been informed about the plan to enforce the ban, allowing them time to get ready. The formal decree will be issued before the start of the new school term.

The mobile phone ban will apply in the city of Bremen to both primary schools and secondary schools up to the 10th grade. During the whole school day, students will have to keep their mobile phones switched off and out of sight. Exemptions will be made based on legitimate reasons such as medical necessity.

So far, schools in Bremen have had differing rules concerning smartphone use. With this regulation, a uniform framework will be established, according to the spokesperson.

Back in mid-May, Senator Aulepp defended the decision to limit mobile phone use in schools, stating, "Private mobile phones have no place in school life. On the contrary, they divert attention from learning, inhibiting students from engaging socially during breaks." She went on to argue, "Schools play a considerable role in instilling good digital habits and regulating mobile phone usage."

Despite the importance of equipping children for the digital world, this doesn’t necessarily involve personal mobile phones, as Bremen schools are already well-equipped digitally.
