Deakin University graduates first cohort from India's pioneering GIFT City campus

Deakin University has marked a historic moment in India's education sector by graduating its first cohort of students from its GIFT City campus. The Australian institution is the first foreign university to open an international branch in the country. The milestone has drawn attention from global educators and policymakers alike.

The campus, located in Gujarat's GIFT City, was established under India's National Education Policy 2020. This policy allows foreign universities to set up physical campuses in the country for the first time. Deakin's presence serves as a test case for transnational education under India's broader reform agenda.

The graduation ceremony was attended by senior dignitaries from both Australia and India, highlighting its diplomatic and economic weight. Australia's High Commissioner to India, Philip Green, called the graduates pioneers in the Australia-India education partnership. The students earned globally recognised Australian qualifications in Masters degrees in Business Analytics and Cyber Security (Professional). Many of these graduates have already secured roles in finance and technology sectors, both within India and overseas. Gujarat's Chief Minister, Bhupendrabhai Patel, framed the achievement as part of India's ambition to become a global knowledge hub. The international education sector is now closely observing Deakin's experiment as a potential blueprint for offshore delivery of Australian education.

The success of Deakin's GIFT City campus signals a new phase in India's higher education landscape. With graduates entering key industries, the initiative demonstrates the practical impact of India's education policy reforms. The model could pave the way for more foreign universities to follow in the coming years.
