David Gill Appointed as Head of Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience Department

Prominent neurologist, David Gill, MD, has been named as the new head of the Division of Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology at our medical facility. Respected in both clinical and academic circles, Gill is making a return to the institution where he completed his medical education.

Dr. David Gill, a renowned geriatrician with a distinguished career in dementia care, has been appointed as the chief of the Division of Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), effective April 1, 2024.

Dr. Gill, who holds a medical degree from the University of Florida, completed his Neurology residency and fellowship in Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology at URMC, followed by a successful tenure at the Penn State College of Medicine where he built a highly-regarded dementia care program.

In his new role, Dr. Gill will work closely with teams in the Alzheimer's Disease Care, Research and Education (AD-CARE) Program, the Del Monte Neurosciences Institute, and the University of Rochester Aging Institute. He will also collaborate with colleagues in the Department of Psychiatry and all members of the Medical Center community to advance clinical care, provide access to cutting-edge treatments, and grow educational programs.

Dr. Gill's vision for dementia care extends beyond the Medical Center. He plans to form partnerships with Lifespan, the Alzheimer's Association, and other community groups to improve access to care for patients and families in a socially responsible manner. He will also expand training opportunities to increase the numbers of providers that care for patients with cognitive disorders, specifically in the Rochester area.

Dr. Gill's dedication to dementia care is not new to the Rochester community. He previously returned to Rochester as faculty at Rochester Regional Health System's Unity Hospital, where he held several leadership positions, including chair of the Department of Neurology and co-director of the Unity Memory Center and Unity Hospital Stroke Center.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Gill has served on various national committees, including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the editorial board of Neurology Today. He has also lectured University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry medical students and directed several successful American Academy of Neurology Dementia courses.
