Dallas ISD rolls out free pre-K for all 3- and 4-year-olds next year
Dallas ISD will now offer free pre-kindergarten to all 3- and 4-year-olds starting next school year. The decision follows a unanimous vote by the district's school board. Officials say the move will benefit students without requiring extra staff or resources. Previously, only certain families qualified for free pre-K in Dallas ISD. This included military households, low-income families, non-English learners, and children of district teachers. Others had to pay tuition, with half-day classes costing £2,500 a year and full-day classes £5,000.
Research shows pre-K students in the district perform better in later grades. By third grade, they score higher in reading and math—around 30 percentage points above non-attendees. Most of these students, between 80% and 93%, also stay in Dallas ISD for kindergarten. The district will begin accepting enrolments for next year's pre-K programme on 1 April. School-board member Dan Micciche has welcomed the expansion, calling it a positive step for families across the district.
The new universal pre-K programme removes tuition fees for all families. It builds on evidence that early education improves long-term academic performance. Enrolment for the 2025-26 school year opens next month.
