Czech College Students Residing in Marburg, Germany
In the picturesque town of Marburg, Germany, twelve Czech students aged 17 to 18 have embarked on a two-week journey to improve their German language skills. The visit is part of a language scholarship program by the Pedagogical Exchange Service (PAD).
The students are warmly welcomed by Marburg's Mayor, Nadine Bernshausen, at the Town Hall. During her speech, Bernshausen emphasized the importance of personal contacts in fostering peace in Europe. She expressed that international friendships are the heart of a strong, solidarity-based Europe.
The students are accommodated in host families with children of the same age, furthering the exchange between students and families and enhancing language skills. This immersion in the local culture is a key aspect of the program, providing an authentic learning experience.
During their stay, the students attend the renowned Gymnasium Philippinum. Rainer Hermann, responsible for the students, has been organizing and accompanying the exchange program for several years. The students receive about six hours of German language instruction per day, with additional lessons provided by various teachers at the Gymnasium.
The lessons focus on German literature, history, geography, music, and current political, economic, or social topics. Vojtech Korec, the Czech chaperone, also provides daily grammar and vocabulary instruction to the students for one to two hours.
Excursions are planned throughout the region to enrich the students' cultural experience. These include boat trips on the Lahn, city tours, a scavenger hunt, day trips, and a farewell evening. These activities not only provide entertainment but also offer opportunities for the students to practice their German in real-life situations.
Upon completion of their schooling in their home country, the visiting Czech students can obtain the German Language Diploma, allowing them to study at a German university or college.
Mayor Bernshausen praised the efforts of both teachers and students in the program, stating that if they listen to each other, laugh, discuss, and remain curious, what they all need grows: trust and peace. This exchange program is a testament to the power of education and cross-cultural understanding in fostering a peaceful and harmonious Europe.
