CUNY Empowers Students and Communities to Combat Climate Change

CUNY is empowering students and communities to tackle climate change through innovative programs and partnerships. The university is not only preparing students for green careers but also engaging communities in climate research and action.

CUNY's New York City Climate Justice Hub, established in 2025, invites community members to set research priorities, focusing on issues like urban heat and sustainable transportation. This collaborative approach ensures that climate solutions are tailored to local needs.

Kingsborough Community College offers free training programs in renewable energy and sustainable technology, targeting disadvantaged communities. This initiative aims to broaden access to green careers and foster a more inclusive green economy.

Faculty at CUNY are preparing students for future jobs with a focus on climate justice, extending beyond traditional STEM fields. They are equipping students with durable workplace skills like professionalism, enthusiasm, and creative problem-solving, along with interdisciplinary skills such as networking and communicating across different communities.

NASA's NISAR research data is being used to teach students about hazards and flooding in socially relevant contexts. This hands-on learning experience helps students understand the real-world implications of climate change and how to address them.

With the demand for green talent growing by 11.6 percent from 2023 to 2024, CUNY's commitment to climate justice and sustainability-focused education is timely and crucial. Despite setbacks like the rollback of the Inflation Reduction Act's climate investments under the Trump administration, the university continues to empower students and communities to combat climate change and build a sustainable future.
