Copenhagen Scholars Conduct Climate Checkup - What's the Status of Environmental Conservation in the City?

In the heart of Rhine River basin, the city of Koblenz is taking strides in climate protection. On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, students from the University of Applied Sciences for Societal Design (HfGG) will present the findings of their "Climate Check" for the city.

The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion, bringing together guests from politics, municipal administration, and civil society. Participants include Alexandra Kraatz, Charlotte Keul, Loriana Metzger, and Astrid Fries. The event, which takes place from 4:30 to 6:00 PM at the University of Applied Sciences for Societal Design (Kornpfortstraße 15), is open to all, and no prior registration is required.

The Climate Check was conducted using the Stadt.Land.Klima! ranking, a nationwide initiative for municipal climate protection. This ranking makes the political will for municipal climate protection visible, measurable, and comparable throughout Germany. The students analysed 35 municipal political measures across six sectors to provide an overview of the climate protection measures already implemented in Koblenz and highlight areas where catch-up is needed.

The University of Applied Sciences for Societal Design, a young, state-recognized, and ideologically independent university in Koblenz with approximately 160 students, offers three degree programs: the Bachelor's program "Economics - Sustainability - Transformation" (OENT), and the Master's programs "Economics - Sustainability - Societal Design" (ONG) and "Economics - Responsibility - Institutional Design" (OVI). The university's vision is a sustainable world: a living and diverse nature, a solidarity-based and democratic society, and a just and life-serving economy.

As Koblenz continues to engage in climate protection activities and education, the specific results of the student-led Climate Check have not been documented or made publicly available in the sources accessible as of early August 2025. Additional direct sources from the university or Koblenz municipal communication would be needed for precise findings.

The panel discussion will focus on potential future-oriented climate protection projects, links to ongoing projects, and specific measures that can be implemented in the coming years. This event underscores the urgency of local climate protection measures, as regional climate change impacts in the Rhine River basin show significant warming trends and challenges such as rising water temperatures expected to reach up to 42°C by the end of the century.

  1. The Council of the City of Koblenz may find the Climate Check, an analysis conducted by students at the University of Applied Sciences for Societal Design, valuable in understanding their city's progress in environmental-science-related climate-change measures.
  2. As the city of Koblenz continues to invest in online-education platforms like those offered by the University of Applied Sciences for Societal Design, it may seek to integrate learning resources from the Climate Check into its education-and-self-development programs to foster a more sustainable future.
  3. With climate-change challenges in the Rhine River basin becoming increasingly severe, stakeholders from politics, municipal administration, and civil society, such as Alexandra Kraatz, Charlotte Keul, Loriana Metzger, and Astrid Fries, could use the insights from the Climate Check to catalyze discussions about future climate protection projects in the city of Koblenz and the region.
