CITYAM Project Paves the Way for Urban Drone Transport in Europe
A new project called CITYAM is helping cities prepare for sustainable urban air mobility. Funded by the Baltic Sea Region programme, it will run from January 2023 to December 2025. The initiative focuses on integrating drones into urban transport systems across Hamburg, Helsinki, and Stockholm.
The project is coordinated by Forum Virium Helsinki, with support from key partners. These include Hamburg Aviation, the Hamburg Port Authority, the Economic Authority, the National Land Survey of Finland, and Aalto University. Various cities around the Baltic Sea region are also involved.
CITYAM aims to solve technical and legal challenges tied to drone operations. This includes managing airspace, improving communication systems, and preventing collisions. Legal hurdles—such as liability, GDPR compliance, and differing national regulations—will be addressed through standardised protocols and real-time traffic management. Aviation authorities are working together to create a unified framework. The solutions developed will be tested in Hamburg, Helsinki, and Stockholm. These trials will explore how drones can fit into multimodal transport networks. The long-term goal is to make urban drone operations a regular part of city transport systems.
The project will provide cities with practical tools for adopting urban air mobility. By 2025, the findings could shape how drones are used for sustainable and efficient transport. The results may also influence future regulations and infrastructure planning in the region.
