City Celebrates Success of Primary School Sports Competition
Last Thursday, the city administration of an unspecified city celebrated the conclusion of the "Which elementary school achieves the most sports badges?" competition. A total of 913 bronze, silver, or gold sports badges were earned by the participating students, with approximately 2,300 students from Dormagen's elementary schools taking part.
The competition, launched by the city administration to foster and maintain the natural urge to move in children, has proven to be a great success. Anja Katharina Bezold, head of the Education, Culture, and Sports department, stated that the competition emphasizes the importance of movement in children's lives.
Mayor Erik Lierenfeld, in his speech, emphasized the importance of sports for all age groups. He highlighted that sports not only enhance quality of life and promote well-being but also instill values such as fairness and team spirit.
The competition saw the Tannenbusch elementary schools completing the podium. The Friedensschule Nievenheim was the most successful school, with approximately 70% of its students earning sports badges. The Delhoven location of the Tannenbusch elementary schools came in second place, with about 63% of its students earning sports badges, and the Straberg location of the Tannenbusch elementary schools came in third place, with around 60% of its students earning sports badges.
Each of the three winning schools received €1,000 in prize money, while all other participating schools were awarded €800. The funds provided by the city administration, totalling €11,000, will be used to purchase and improve play and movement offerings on the schoolyards.
Bezold expressed a desire to counterbalance screen time in children's lives by promoting movement. She stated that the competition demonstrated the positive impact of sports on school cohesion and how sports can bring joy and strengthen cohesion in schools.
The city administration's funding for the competition will be used to enhance play and movement opportunities on schoolyards, ensuring that the benefits of the competition extend beyond the competition itself. The competition has shown that sports can play a significant role in fostering a healthy and active lifestyle in children, promoting teamwork, and strengthening school communities.
