Stiftung Lesen Emphasizes Reading Aloud in Multiple Languages - Celebrities and Lawmakers Join Push to Get Parents Reading Aloud to Children

The Reading Foundation is urging more parents to read aloud to their children, with a third currently not doing so. To inspire them, the foundation has enlisted prominent figures for its Digital Reading Festival and is supporting daycare centers with multilingual texts.

The Reading Foundation is encouraging parents to read aloud to their children, as one-third currently do not. To motivate them, the foundation has launched the Digital Reading Festival, featuring notable readers such as Raúl Krauthausen, Dagmar Schönleber, Lavinia Wilson, and members of the German Bundestag. The foundation also supports parents, daycare centers, and educators in finding suitable texts, including bilingual and monolingual ones in native languages. This is particularly important in daycare centers where up to 25 different nationalities may come together. One in four families in Germany speaks a language other than German at home, making multilingual read-aloud sessions crucial. The foundation offers multilingual read-aloud videos featuring celebrities like Özcan Coşar and Bernhard Hoëcker to inspire children growing up with languages other than German and spark curiosity about languages in all children.

National Reading Day, a joint initiative by Die Zeit, the Reading Foundation, and the Deutsche Bahn Foundation, has been taking place annually since 2004. The 2024 edition will highlight multilingualism, with the theme 'Reading Aloud Speaks Your Language'. The foundation's efforts aim to foster a love for reading and languages among children.
