Merz by the North Sea: From Wind Turbine to Howler - CDU Leader Friedrich Merz Visits Husum, Emphasizes Renewable Energy Support
Friedrich Merz, the CDU leader, visited Schleswig-Holstein on Monday, spending over an hour in Husum’s town hall in discussions with the cabinet of Minister-President Daniel Günther. The visit addressed various topics, including renewable energy, skilled worker shortages, and security. Notably, Merz emphasized the strong public support for renewable energy expansion in northern Germany.
Merz began his visit by observing GP Joule in North Frisia, witnessing firsthand the increasing cost-competitiveness of wind and solar power. He later received a sponsorship certificate for 'Lüthje', a seal from the Friedrichskoog Seal Sanctuary, from Daniel Günther. The sanctuary cares for orphaned seal pups, preparing them for release once they reach at least 25 kilograms and are healthy.
The meeting also tackled the shortage of skilled workers. Merz referenced the federal government's planned Work-and-Stay agencies, aiming to address this issue. Northvolt was discussed, with Günther reiterating that they have a prime site near Heide for industrial development. Security was another key topic, with Günther highlighting the state's role in national and European security.
Merz's visit to Husum's town hall was productive, covering a range of important topics. His participation in the cabinet meeting was deemed a positive signal by Daniel Günther. Despite no explicit opposition to Merz's remarks on the cityscape in Husum or the federal government's migration policy, the visit fostered constructive dialogue and reinforced the commitment to renewable energy, skilled worker support, and security.
