CBSE's new report cards in Indore focus on skills and career guidance over marks
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is rolling out a new style of report card in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. These career-linked reports will track not just marks but also skills, aptitude, and future career guidance. The change aims to give a fuller picture of each student's abilities beyond traditional exams. The updated report cards will assess conceptual understanding, communication, teamwork, and involvement in extracurricular activities. Marks alone will no longer define a student's progress. Instead, the system will highlight practical skills and personal growth.
Mental health experts have welcomed the shift, suggesting it could ease exam-related stress among students. Parent Supriya Sharma agrees, calling the reform a step forward as it recognises children's strengths beyond grades. Schools, however, face challenges in adapting. Teaching methods must evolve to evaluate skills more precisely. Private school director Timsi Rai points out that success depends on how well the system is put into practice. The new reports will also include 'career cards,' offering guidance to students unsure about their future paths. School counsellor Anamika Singh notes that these cards help undecided pupils explore potential careers. CBSE helpline counsellor Jaydeb Kar adds that the reform tackles long-standing issues in education by focusing on individual interests and development. Educator and Padma Shri awardee Janak McGilligan Palta sees the change as a return to education's true purpose: preparing students for life, not just exams.
The CBSE's new report cards will combine marks, skills, and career advice into one document. Schools in Indore must now adjust their teaching and assessment methods to fit the updated format. The reform's impact will depend on how effectively it is implemented in classrooms.
