CBSE cracks down on schools charging illegal fees for Class 10 retests
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has warned its affiliated schools against charging unauthorised fees during the List of Candidates (LOC) submission for the Class 10 Second Board Examination. The alert comes after reports revealed that some institutions were demanding extra payments, breaking the board's guidelines. The first phase of LOC submission is designed to count how many students plan to take the Second Board Examination. At this stage, no fees should be collected. However, investigations found that certain schools were asking for up to three months' tuition fees alongside the LOC, a practice explicitly banned by CBSE.
The examination fee only applies later, when students confirm or modify their registration. If a student withdraws after registering, their result will still be based on their main board exam performance. CBSE has made it clear that schools must only collect the prescribed examination fee and avoid any additional charges. In March 2026, the board reported that 1,247 schools across India had violated fee guidelines during LOC submission. CBSE has stressed that further breaches will lead to strict action against those responsible.
The board's warning aims to stop schools from overcharging students during the registration process. Schools found breaking the rules now face potential penalties. The move ensures that only the official examination fee is collected at the correct stage.
