Canada Eases PGWP Rules: College Graduates Exempt from Field of Study Requirements
New rules for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada have been announced, affecting international graduates. The changes, effective March 2025, include revised language proficiency requirements and field of study exemptions.
Applicants who submit their PGWP application after November 1, 2024, must now meet new language proficiency standards. Graduates of other college, polytechnic, or non-university programs must demonstrate a level 5 language proficiency, while those from other university programs or university graduates not at the bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level must still meet field of study requirements.
Notably, graduates of college bachelor's programs are now exempt from field of study requirements. Previously, only university bachelor's program graduates enjoyed this exemption. All graduates, regardless of program level, must prove a level 7 language proficiency for a PGWP, except for those who studied English or French as a second language, or completed over 50% of their program through distance learning, who remain ineligible.
These changes aim to streamline the PGWP process for international graduates. College bachelor's program graduates will face fewer restrictions, while other graduates must meet new language proficiency standards. All applicants should ensure they understand and meet the updated requirements to successfully apply for or maintain their PGWP.
