Canada appoints former BlackRock executive Mark Wiseman as U.S. ambassador
Mark Wiseman has been named Canada’s next ambassador to the United States. He will take over the role from Kirsten Hillman on 15 February. The appointment comes as both nations focus on trade and economic cooperation.
Born in Niagara Falls and raised in Burlington, Ontario, Wiseman holds a joint degree in law and business from the University of Toronto. Early in his career, he clerked for former Supreme Court justice Beverley McLachlin before moving into finance. He later worked as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer, managed equity funds, and led the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.
Wiseman has also chaired the Alberta Investment Management Corporation. His professional background includes a strong focus on sustainable investments and the economic shift toward a zero-carbon economy. Previously, he served on the Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-U.S. Relations, though his direct political and diplomatic experience remains limited. In his new position, Wiseman will help shape key Canada-U.S. priorities. These include addressing trade tariffs and reviewing the Canada-U.S.-Mexico free trade agreement.
Wiseman’s appointment marks a shift from finance to diplomacy. His expertise in economics and investment will likely influence discussions on trade and sustainability. The role will require navigating complex bilateral relations between the two countries.
