Newly Appointed Campus Rabbi at Syracuse University Focuses on Interfaith Understanding and Ecological Sustainability
Rabbi Natan Levy, a renowned scholar with a passion for interfaith understanding and ecological sustainability, has been appointed as the campus rabbi for Syracuse Hillel and Jewish chaplain at Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University.
Rabbi Levy's academic journey began with a B.A. in religious studies from Pomona College in California, followed by a M.A. in Jewish studies from King's College. He furthered his studies with a Ph.D. in environmental theology from the University of Bristol. In 2006, he received his rabbinical ordination from Yeshivat Ha'Mivtar, Israel.
Throughout his career, Rabbi Levy has held various leadership positions. Prior to his appointment at Syracuse University, he served as head of operations for the Faiths Forum for London and senior lecturer at Leo Baeck College in the United Kingdom. He also served as university Jewish chaplain for Western England and Wales from 2005-08 and head of interfaith outreach at the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
Rabbi Levy's scholarly works reflect his commitment to interfaith understanding and ecological sustainability. He has co-authored "Sharing Eden: Green Teachings from Jews, Christians and Muslims" and published "Genesis 1-11, the Rise of Agriculture and the Earliest States." His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including the Hass/Koshland Memorial Award, JNF Scholarship for Environmental Activities, McCaul Scholarship, Gingko Interfaith Fellowship, and KAICIID Interreligious Dialogue Fellowship.
In his new roles at Syracuse University, Rabbi Levy will lead Jewish student life and community as the campus rabbi at Syracuse Hillel. He will also support Jewish religious life within the broader, multi-faith spiritual community of the university as the Jewish chaplain at Hendricks Chapel. Hendricks Chapel, the university’s interfaith and spiritual center, supports diverse religious and ethical life.
The Rev. Brian Konkol, vice president and dean of Hendricks Chapel, is excited about the partnership with Syracuse Hillel and the arrival of Rabbi Levy.
