Cable Car Proposed to Revolutionize Cologne's Public Transport

A new cable car system could revolutionize Cologne's public transport network, according to a proposal by Urban Netways think tank and Cologne University of Applied Sciences. This climate-friendly solution could directly connect neighborhoods and open up new areas.

The cable car would travel at a steady 25 kilometers per hour, matching the speed of cars, buses, and trains. Four graduates from Cologne University of Applied Sciences have planned two route sections and several sample stations for the urban cable car system. The project aims to fill gaps in Cologne's public transport by linking with existing networks.

A 2023 study by Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe confirmed the feasibility of integrating a cable car into the city's public transport system. Building a cable car is more climate-friendly than subway construction and would operate emission-free. The cable car system could directly connect neighborhoods, open up new areas, and do so in a climate-friendly way.

A final decision on the project will not be made before the next local elections in 2027, with a city council vote to follow. The estimated cost for the entire project is €125 million, with a potential fast implementation if approved by politicians.
