BRAC University kicks off spring 2026 with AI-driven future in focus

BRAC University welcomed new students for the spring 2026 semester with an orientation programme held at its Merul Badda campus in Dhaka. The event featured speeches from university leaders and industry experts, focusing on opportunities in the digital age and the role of students in shaping the future.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar opened the programme by urging students to stay informed, act responsibly, and contribute positively to society. He also highlighted concerns over youth unemployment in Bangladesh, encouraging them to develop specialized skills and deeper knowledge.

The keynote address was delivered by Johan Buse, CEO of Banglalink Digital Communications Limited. His lecture, titled 'Youth Opportunities in the Age of AI: Bold Futures and Born in the Age of Digital Change', explored how artificial intelligence is transforming industries. Buse noted that AI now accelerates work across nearly all sectors, with projections suggesting 80% of future jobs will integrate the technology. He advised students to embrace AI opportunities but stressed the importance of ethical and cautious use.

The orientation also celebrated student achievements. Feroza Mahzabin was recognized for Ishara, her AI-powered Bangla sign language application. Tasmia Mahmud Parisha received praise for her success in an international moot court competition, while Lamia Ahmed Khan was honoured for winning a taekwondo medal.

Attendees learned about BRAC University's history, educational philosophy, and its founder, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed. The institution's contributions to UN sustainable development goals—such as quality education, decent work, innovation, reduced inequalities, and peace and justice—were also highlighted.

The orientation programme set the tone for the new semester by blending academic guidance with real-world insights. Students left with a clearer understanding of AI's growing influence, the importance of skill development, and the university's commitment to social impact.
