BPP, COREN Pledge to Strengthen Collaboration for Transparent Infrastructure Procurement
The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) have pledged to strengthen collaboration, aiming to enhance transparency and efficiency in public procurement processes. This commitment was underscored during a recent meeting, where both parties agreed to establish a joint team for strategic discussions towards a Memorandum of Understanding.
Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, Director-General of BPP, stressed the importance of BPP and COREN in enforcing standards and accountability in infrastructure development and procurement practices. He commended the role of engineers in nation-building and urged them to influence policy formulation and project conceptualisation. Adedokun also expressed BPP's commitment to declining procurement requests involving unregistered engineers and called for reforms in capacity building, updating procurement guidelines, and engineering practices to meet modern demands.
Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, President and Chairman of COREN, appreciated BPP's efforts towards enhancing transparency and efficiency in public procurement processes. He acknowledged the expanded mandate of COREN, now encompassing technologists, technicians, craftsmen, and artisans, in addition to engineers. Both parties agreed to set up a team to drive strategic discussions towards achieving a Memorandum of Understanding.
BPP, under Adedokun's leadership, has shown a commitment to supporting young engineering graduates. The bureau is willing to open its doors to them and NYSC corps members for internships. Additionally, Adedokun appealed to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to post engineering graduates to teach in secondary schools, further bridging the gap between education and industry.
The collaboration between BPP and COREN is set to bring significant improvements to Nigeria's infrastructure development and procurement practices. With a joint responsibility to enforce standards and accountability, both parties are committed to driving reforms and providing opportunities for young engineering professionals.
