Boston University Launches First Fully Online Master of Divinity Program
Boston University School of Theology (BUSTH) has launched a new Online Master of Divinity (OMDiv) program. This innovative initiative aims to make high-quality theological education more accessible to students worldwide. The program's initial offerings include an Ecclesial Ministry track, with a Chaplaincy track set to follow.
The OMDiv program combines rigorous academics, spiritual formation, and practical ministry experience. Students will engage with a curriculum focusing on sacred texts, practical theology, ethics, spirituality, and spiritual care. This comprehensive approach reflects the School of Theology's historic Methodist roots and its mission to form leaders who serve with wisdom, humanity, and justice.
The program also includes contextual education placements. These allow students to integrate learning with ministry in their local communities. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of the History of Christianity, Rady Roldán-Figueroa, plays a key role in this aspect.
Dean G. Sujin Pak sees the OMDiv as a response to the need for trained and compassionate faith leaders. She believes it will equip students to navigate the complexities of contemporary ministry.
Final approval of the OMDiv as a new graduate degree at Boston University is anticipated in November 2025. Initial admissions decisions for the Fall 2026 OMDiv cohort are slated to be issued in December 2025. The OMDiv program promises to expand access to theological education, fostering a new generation of spiritually grounded, socially engaged leaders.
