Berlin’s Poetry Contest Turns Commutes Into Art This Spring

Berlin’s annual poetry contest, DASHing Words in Motion, is now open for entries. The competition invites local writers to submit short, original works inspired by the city’s transport scenes. Submissions will be accepted until 5 p.m. this Friday.

The contest welcomes poems of up to 30 words and 15 lines, with each writer allowed to enter three unpublished pieces. Participants must be at least 16 years old and either live, work, or study in Berlin. Organisers encourage entries that reflect personal creativity and a strong connection to the city.

Last year’s edition drew 45 poems from 21 community members, with seven winners chosen. This time, successful entrants will be informed in mid-February. Their poems will then appear on public transport during April, coinciding with National Poetry Month. The theme ties into the DASH’s mottos and the rhythms of daily commuting. Winners will see their work displayed for thousands of passengers to read as they travel across the city.

The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on Friday. Winning poems will feature prominently on Berlin’s transit network next spring. The contest offers a chance for local voices to reach a wide audience through public art.
